The Seven Sisters program has gained a new ambassador, with Verity Simmons committing to working with the team on program delivery and implementation across our sites.
Simmons has been an ambassador for Shooting Stars since the inception of the program in 2015, having worked closely with the girls in a broader capacity, and is now keen to hone her focus.
“I was nervous coming on board with the Seven Sisters program as it’s a really different opportunity for me.”
“I’ve always been amongst the girls on the netball court, so to join Seven Sisters to help with the development of the program and development stage is really exciting, especially as it grows and becomes bigger and bigger every year.”
The star centre for West Coast Fever knows a thing or two about netball and is keen to share those skills with the Shooting Stars participants.
“Being able to bring my knowledge of the game to this program and share how netball has helped me and opened doors for me is great. I think that sport is just a gateway for these girls to learn about their passions and future opportunities.”
The ten-week program is its third year of providing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls and women with opportunities to develop positive social and emotional wellbeing skills and preventative mental health strategies, enabling them to respond and adapt to emerging challenges as they progress through the life course. These strategies are taught through a netball-based program, where skills and drills provide a unique way for the girls to learn.
Seven Sisters Program Coordinator, Jade McGuire, spoke of her excitement around Simmons’ new role.
“We are incredibly lucky to have Verity jumping on board, not only in an ambassador role but also working behind the scenes to help with the further development of the program. Her knowledge around physical and mental wellbeing will be invaluable when creating and producing additional resources in this space.”
“She's already brought ideas and eagerness to the program so I can’t wait to see how this will progress. Her energy and delivery of the program will be highly beneficial - not only for the participants themselves but also to our Seven Sisters Team.”
The Seven Sisters program is proudly supported by principal partner, Mineral Resources, alongside The Phillips Foundation, The Channel 7 Telethon Trust and Lotterywest.
