Off the back of Friday’s Telethon Beneficiaries announcement, we are extremely proud to announce that Shooting Stars have been chosen by the Channel 7 Telethon Trust as one of the beneficiaries for 2022.
Telethon, having raised a record breaking $62 million for sick, disadvantaged, and vulnerable children in WA, helps charities such as ours make a real difference in the lives of these children. The grant that we have been awarded will support our Seven Sisters program.
The Seven Sisters program provides Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls and women with opportunities to develop positive social and emotional wellbeing skills and preventative mental health strategies, enabling them to respond and adapt to emerging challenges as they progress through the life course.
The program comprises ten-weeks of one-hour sessions facilitated on the netball court, culminating with a community netball match, where local health services are invited to attend and engage with participants. The event improves access to critical services provided to children in regional WA by helping participants develop a connection with the people who deliver services in their town. This engagement removes barriers known to prevent girls and young women accessing the services available to them.
This year is the first year the program will be rolled out to high school students, after being successfully implemented in our primary school sites in 2021.
Shooting Stars Executive Officer, Fran Haintz, recognises the difference that a grant such as this can make to our programs.
“Such recognition through Telethon is wonderful for the Shooting Stars family, and in particular our Seven Sisters program. We will use the support to continue to drive change and support the empowerment of and positive outcomes for our Shooting Stars participants.”
