Shooting Stars is pleased to announce the official opening of its eighth site in Western Australia, with Leonora opening its doors this week.
Shooting Stars is an initiative of Netball WA and Glass Jar Australia, which uses netball as a vehicle to encourage greater engagement and attendance at school of young Aboriginal girls living in WA’s remote communities and regional towns.
The Program has continued to grow and create positive change in the lives of close to 400 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls across Western Australia.
Leonora will be Shooting Stars’ first Goldfield program, located 833 kilometers northeast of Perth and will target up to 35 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls from Year’s 4-10.
Shooting Stars Executive Officer Fran Haintz said the opening of the its latest site is another milestone in what has been a positive year.
“It’s fantastic to see Shooting Stars open its first program in Western Australia’s Goldfields and on the Kuwarra peoples country,” Haintz said.
“There has been a groundswell of community support and I can’t wait to see young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls within Leonora embrace their education and push towards achieving their full potential.”
“I would like to thank Saracen Mineral Holdings and St Barbara’s Limited for their support in helping to make the Shooting Stars’ Leonora Program possible.”
The latest Shooting Stars site will be run in partnership with the Leonora District High School and the broader Leonora community.
