Shooting Stars is pleased to announce the extension of its program in Narrogin into both Narrogin and East Narrogin Primary Schools.
Having commenced in Narrogin in early 2018 in partnership with Narrogin Senior High School, extending the successful program will allow Shooting Stars to now reach girls in Year 5 through to Year 12.
Currently, 16 primary school participants have engaged in the school program, which uses netball and other tools as vehicles to drive greater engagement and attendance at school by empowering young Aboriginal girls living in WA’s remote communities and towns.
Fran Haintz, Executive Officer of Shooting Stars, said the extension of the Shooting Stars program into Primary Schools sets a sturdy foundation that will prepare the girls for High School.
“The transition from primary school to secondary school can be daunting for many students. With the introduction of Shooting Stars in the later years of primary school in Narrogin, we believe the girls will be better equipped and ready to take on their secondary education.”
Implementing Shooting Stars into primary school will assist the girls to develop a stronger sense of self and cultural identity, connection to country and increased knowledge of health and wellbeing before they enter High School.
David Harrison, Principal at Narrogin Primary School, said that he welcomed the program with open arms after seeing the positive impact it has had for Aboriginal girls at the school.
“We have seen the girls’ attendance improve because they enjoy participating in the Shooting Stars program. It has positively impacted on their behaviour and the respect they demonstrate for themselves and others. They are learning that it is their responsibility to make good choices and to be the best that they can be in all they do.”
The establishment of the program at both Narrogin Primary Schools has also created another position for an Aboriginal woman from the community to benefit from meaningful employment.
With the addition of Narrogin and East Narrogin Primary School to the program, Shooting Stars has taken another step towards its goal of working with 20 schools by the end of 2021.
