Year 12 student, Latisha Ranger, attributes her self-confidence to the Shooting Stars Senior Leadership Camp she attended in 2018. Thanks to Viva Energy’s support, participants from Laverton and Leonora were given the same opportunity for this year’s camp.
“The camp opened my eyes to career opportunities that I wasn’t even aware of,” said Latisha.
“Throughout the week there were a number of tasks that pushed us outside of our comfort zone, which helped to build up my self-confidence and develop my leadership skills.”
“During the camp I spoke at the West Coast Fever pre-game function in front of hundreds of people, something I never thought I’d be able to do.”
The annual Leadership Camp is an opportunity for our participants to experience the city and engage with strong Aboriginal leaders to gain cultural knowledge and understanding, develop project management skills as well as identify post-school pathways.
“One of my favourite parts of the camp was having the opportunity to meet other Shooting Stars participants from the other sites and build strong bonds with like-minded girls,” said Latisha.
Since the camp, Latisha has embraced a number of leadership opportunities and has recently completed Year 12 whilst working as a Casual Program Assistant at the Shooting Stars Carnarvon site for one day a week.
For 2021, Latisha has secured a full-time traineeship with the Carnarvon Aboriginal Medical Service, an Aboriginal community-controlled health service based in her hometown of Carnarvon.
Shooting Stars Executive Officer, Fran Haintz said it’s great to see the flow on benefits that come from Shooting Stars’ rewards programs.
“There is nothing more powerful than hearing our participants talk about their leadership journey and how Shooting Stars has supported them,” said Haintz.
“I am so proud of Latisha and all she has achieved; she has been on her Shooting Stars journey for five years and I am excited for what the future holds for her.”
“I would like to thank Viva Energy for their support in 2020, allowing our participants from the Laverton and Leonora sites to have this same opportunity as Latisha and I look forward to seeing what these girls will take away from their own camp.”
