Shooting Stars is proud to announce it has received a $4,000 boost courtesy of the ConnectGroups small grants program, Dream it Forward.
ConnectGroups promotes the practice of peer support throughout Western Australia, with the Dream it Forward program focussed on strengthening, sustaining or adding value to community-led projects that positively impact the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Shooting Stars Executive Officer, Fran Haintz, welcomed the support of a fellow West Australian organisation.
“ConnectGroups have an established history of fostering empowerment within communities and individuals and that philosophy possesses great synergy with the work we do through Shooting Stars,” Haintz said.
“This funding will assist us in achieving a number of key outcomes such as positive social experiences, increased awareness of health and wellbeing, and the nurturing of confident young leaders within our delivery communities.”
The Dream it Forward grant will aid in the delivery of the Confident Me Cultural Women’s Camp, held over three days in Halls Creek at the end of August for High Achieving students.
The Camp encompasses several components of the Shooting Stars program including a focus on women’s health factors, emotional wellbeing and the Yarning Circle study method.
An initiative of Netball WA and the Glass Jar Australia, Shooting Stars aims to use netball as the vehicle to encourage greater engagement and attendance at school of young Indigenous girls living in WA’s remote communities and regional towns.
The program now engages close to 300 students across six delivery sites; namely Halls Creek, Derby, Carnarvon, Meekatharra, Wiluna and Mullewa, , with more than 60% of the students now attending school at a rate of 80% or higher, and a 10-12% increase in attendance across all sites year on year from 2016.
