The Shooting Stars Annual Senior Leadership Camp took place this week with 16 participants from across the state coming together to experience Perth city.
The chosen participants, across years 10-12, were selected based on their positive leadership application, school attendance and engagement.
The camp provides opportunities for participants to engage with strong Aboriginal leaders to gain cultural knowledge and understanding, develop project management skills as well as identify post-school pathways.
Narrogin Shooting Stars participant, Nicole Taylor, said she was honoured to be on the Senior Leadership Camp for 2021.
“Just to be recognised for all my hard work this year and overcoming so many obstacles and barriers to get to this moment, I’m very proud of myself,” said Nicole.
“My favourite part of the camp has been meeting all the girls from the other sites and getting to know them and growing with each other. It feels really cool to have connections now all over WA.”
Nicole attributes the person she is today to the Shooting Stars program.
“Without the program, I would still be that nervous, quiet person I was, who didn’t like large crowds or school. I just feel like without Shooting Stars a lot of us Aboriginal girls wouldn’t feel supported and wouldn’t be where we are today,” said Nicole.
The Senior Leadership Camp has been a once in a lifetime opportunity for Nicole.
“At the start of year, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I was in my final year of school, and I was scared.”
“Shooting Stars Camps like these have really opened my eyes to all the opportunities available for us young women. I feel like I have so many options, even if I don’t get into uni there are still options like becoming a Shooting Stars Program Coordinator myself and helping the younger girls in my community.”
The Senior Leadership Camp participants will rejoin their sites this week and lead a Gold Industry Group Leadership Project, as a result of their learnings from the Camp.
