Federal Member for Durack the Hon. Melissa Price MP visited the Meekatharra Shooting Stars yesterday to see first-hand the positive impacts the program is having on young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls.
The Program is now affecting genuine change in the lives of more than 300 participants across six sites, with a seventh to be launched in Narrogin in Term 2.
The Member for Durack and Assistant Minister for the Environment was treated to a presentation, engaged in some netball drills and enjoyed a shared lunch prepared by the Shooting Stars girls at Meekatharra District High School on Monday.
“It was wonderful to spend the day with the girls from Shooting Stars Meekatharra, and it is really inspiring to see the good work people can do in our regional communities” Ms Price said.
“The girls were all incredibly bright, confident young women, and I am sure they all have a fine future.
“In terms of what the Government is looking at for engaging young Indigenous girls, Shooting Stars is a fantastic example.
“It gets girls to school, it keeps them engaged and motivated, and is something they can do right through their schooling life” Ms Price said.
Shooting Stars Executive Officer Fran Haintz said she was extremely grateful for Ms Price’s hands on support of the program.
“Shooting Stars would like to thank the Federal Government not just for their financial support, but to have Ms Price on the ground at one of our sites is uplifting for our staff and young girls involved in the program,” she said.
“We understand Ms Price has a busy schedule and sincerely thank her for taking the time to travel to Meekatharra to meet our staff and participants and look forward to welcoming her and other members of parliament to our sites in the future.”
