Shooting Stars would like to extend its sincere congratulations to students from Carnarvon, Halls Creek, Narrogin and Mullewa who completed their secondary education this month.
Shooting Stars graduations doubled in 2019 with 10 participants from Carnarvon (4), Halls Creek (2), Narrogin (2) and Mullewa (2) completing their Year 12 studies.
Shooting Stars is an educational program that uses netball and engagement activities as vehicles to achieve its primary vision of increasing school attendance rates for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls living in WA’s remote communities and regional towns to 80-90%.
The program now engages more than 350 students across eight delivery sites, with 20% of participants improving attendance term on term, while 50% of participants maintain an average attendance rate of 80% or above. Furthermore, the program is a key driver in creating equality for female leaders and generational change, with 85% of its staff and 66% of its Board identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.
Many of the students who completed Year 12 have been participants of the program since its inception in 2015, enjoying the support and inspiration the coordinators have provided.
Shooting Stars Executive Officer Fran Haintz said she was proud of the group and was excited to see what the future holds for the graduates.
“It’s a really special time for our students, their family and friends and our Shooting Stars staff,” said Haintz.
“Shooting Stars is about equipping our girls with the tools to make strong decisions and push their own boundaries as young leaders in community.”
