Shooting Stars will empower Aboriginal girls and women in Port Hedland as its program launches in Hedland Senior High School.
Leading the program in Port Hedland is Sarah Ramirez, a local woman born and raised in Port Hedland, who is honoured to be a positive role model for the next generation.
“Along my own journey, I always had someone, a mother-figure, who supported me through whatever stage of life I was at,” said Ramirez.
“It means so much to me to have the opportunity to be a positive role model in the lives of Aboriginal girls in Port Hedland.”
Growing up in Port Hedland, Ramirez noticed a gap for a program to empower young Aboriginal girls and women in her community.
“Going to graduations over the years, I never really saw any Aboriginal girls graduating from school, so the need is definitely there. I am thankful for Shooting Stars because now we have a space where we can support and develop our local girls.”
With a Certificate IV in Mental Health, Ramirez is a strong believer in the power of nurturing.
“It wasn’t until after my studies I truly understood just how important nurturing is for young kids and the impact it can have on the outcome of a child’s life,” said Ramirez.
“If I can be a positive role model to our girls and ensure that support is consistent for them as they navigate the world, I think the affects will be huge.”
Shooting Stars officially commenced in Hedland Senior High School late in Term 2 targeting 78 Year 7 and 8 participants and is set to expand its impact in 2022 as it grows into Year 9 and 10.
