Glass Jar Australia is proud to announce the launch of a sixth delivery site for the Shooting Stars program, with the latest addition to be hosted in Mullewa.
Mullewa joins Derby, Meekatharra, Wiluna, Carnarvon and pilot site Halls Creek, with Shooting Stars now engaging in excess of 260 students.
The program officially launched last Friday with a family fun day at the Mullewa District High School in the State’s Mid-West.
The Fun Day incorporated the launch and comprised cooked food and activities including a water slide, mechanical bull, cricket, face painting and netball.
Shooting Stars Community Development Coordinator for the Mid-West and Gascoyne, Rose Whitau, said the students were thrilled to officially join the program.
“The Mullewa girls are so proud to be a part of Shooting Stars,” Whitau said.
“They had a taste of Shooting Stars in Term 4 last year, when we rolled out our Activation Model comprising netball sessions, classroom support, and a reward activity for those who met the Shooting Stars expectations of attendance and behaviour.”
“Having now officially joined the program their excitement is palpable and you can already sense the pride they feel when they wear their shirts.”
Less than 100km from Geraldton, and more than 450km north of Perth, Mullewa is the ideal location for Shooting Stars according to Glass Jar Australia Executive Officer, Fran Haintz.
15 students have already registered for Shooting Stars in Mullewa with the group already looking forward to a movie night in week six of the program, as well as primary and high school camps with other Shooting Stars sites in term two.
An initiative of Netball WA and Glass Jar Australia, Shooting Stars aims to use netball as the vehicle to encourage greater engagement and attendance at school of young Aboriginal girls living in WA’s remote communities and regional towns.
Significantly to date, more than 20% of these students have increased their attendance by more than 10%, equating to an additional five days per term.
Launched via a pilot program in Halls Creek in 2015, Shooting Stars now engages more than 260 students across six separate sites.
