After its success in remote and regional sites across Western and South Australia, Shooting Stars has expanded its reach into the Perth Metro area, opening its first site in Kiara College after successfully securing funding through the Department of Education.
Now in its seventh year, the program provides advocacy and support, engagement activities, rewards, and health and wellbeing sessions to strengthen the confidence and cultural identity of Aboriginal girls and women and help cultivate positive attitudes towards their health and wellbeing.
Kiara College’s Principle, Grant Brown, has noted the importance of the Shooting Stars program within the school, and the connections already forging.
“Kiara College wish to welcome Shooting Stars to our school and we look forward to forging a strong and vital partnership which will support the growth and development of our Aboriginal girls. The Shooting Stars program has only recently been established at Kiara and already there is a strong connection to our students and staff. The obvious passion and vitality of the Shooting Stars team has already proven significant in engaging our girls. I am confident that this combined with experienced staff, well-structured programs, a proven track record of success, as well as the use of student performance data to inform planning and structure, will ensure that our Aboriginal girls are in good hands and on a positive growth trajectory.”
The program will cover all year levels in Kiara College, providing students with a consistent level of support and engagement throughout their education journey and onto their post school destinations.
Shooting Stars Executive Officer, Fran Haintz, stated, "we are thrilled to open our first metropolitan based Shooting Stars program. Our critical success factors of collaborative community partnerships, place-based program design and Aboriginal employment will translate well into the learning environment at Kiara College and ensure successful outcomes for the girls."
