Shooting Stars is proud to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) and support this year’s theme, Break the Bias.
The theme aims to raise awareness against bias and take action to achieve a world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated.
Empowering Aboriginal girls and women is at the core of Shooting Stars. Over the last seven years, Shooting Stars has put a strong focus on helping close the gap for Aboriginal women in leadership positions across Western Australia.
Shooting Stars Pathways Coordinator, Talicia Jetta, talks to the importance of having representation in positions of power.
“It’s really important to have Aboriginal women in leadership positions,” said Jetta.
“Not only because of the value we bring in our resilience, strength, knowledge and passion, but it also makes us feel heard. Seeing our women lead gives us hope that one day we too can achieve what they’re doing and be a voice for our community.”
Shooting Stars Operations Manager, Latoya Bolton-Black outlines how Shooting Stars is contributing to making a more equal world for Aboriginal girls.
“Shooting Stars provides local mentors for our participants who walk alongside them in their education journey,” said Bolton-Black.
“It’s very important our participants feel supported in attending school and achieving goals and having success in their young lives. Having Aboriginal women leading the program is key in this journey, as they become role models for the girls.”
“Through Shooting Stars, our participants are exposed to a lot of opportunities to grow and develop under our leadership and guidance.”
Shooting Stars Chairperson Glenda Kickett shares her admiration for the Shooting Stars program.
“Shooting Stars is a platform for our young women to be leaders in the education system and their communities. Our young women now have someone in the school through Shooting Stars advocating for them, supporting them both at school and also with other issues going on in their lives.”
“We’ve got to support our young women, build their capacities and nurture their strengths, and that’s what Shooting Stars is doing.”
Shooting Stars sites are celebrating International Women’s Day all across Western Australia and South Australia this week with participants hosting lunches for their female leaders in their communities and celebrating their achievements.
