A select group of high achieving students from the Shooting Stars program are currently in Perth on the annual Leadership camp.
This camp rewards the efforts of students who have directly impacted their school attendance rates and behaviour across the year, with all 10 students having shown exponential improvement to date in 2017.
As well as attending West Coast Fever’s Indigenous Round game tomorrow night and participating in the team’s official Indigenous dress blessing ceremony this morning, the students will engage in a series of activities on their camp.
The group have also visited the School of Indigenous Studies at The University of Western Australia, had a behind the scenes tour of the West Coast Fever training environment with Shooting Stars Ambassadors Verity Charles and Kate Beveridge, and will enjoy a trip to Cirque de Soleil tonight.
Glass Jar Australia Executive Officer Fran Haintz said the trip was a fantastic reward for the students.
“The improvement that these students have shown across the year has been outstanding, and this trip is thoroughly deserved for their hard work in the school environment,” she said.
“This is a once in a lifetime experience and something each of these students will treasure.”
“To be exposed to the variety of opportunities that wait beyond school will only serve as further motivation for them to maintain the level of engagement in our program that has seen them rewarded with a place on this trip.”
West Coast Fever’s final game of the Suncorp Super Netball will hold extra significance for the Club this Saturday night, when they host the table topping Melbourne Vixens in the annual Indigenous Round at Perth Arena.
2017 will be the fourth consecutive season Fever have held a dedicated Indigenous Round, providing an avenue through which to highlight the significant relationship that exists between netball and the Indigenous communities of Western Australia.
This year’s game is also set to take on added meaning, with the date coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum, an event which Shooting Stars have been learning about in detail this Term.
Shooting Stars now engages more than 300 students across six separate delivery sites; Halls Creek, Derby, Carnarvon, Meekatharra, Mullewa and Wiluna.
The program also has 15 fulltime employees, more than half of whom identify as Indigenous Australians.
Shooting Stars is proudly supported by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
