The first Sparks camp of the year was recently held at Point Peron campsite in Rockingham, where participants from the Southwest, Metro, and Goldfields sites came together to connect, challenge themselves, step out of their comfort zones, explore their talents, and ignite their sparks.
The Sparks program is for Shooting Stars participants in year nine, and is all about finding and igniting their passions, which can be channelled towards future employment pathways. With the support, guidance and opportunities provided through the Sparks and Pathways programs, the girls are empowered to set goals for themselves and take ownership of their education and employment journeys.
Nineteen girls came together for the camp from Kiara, Leonora, Laverton, Merredin, Narrogin and Collie, taking the opportunity to meet peers from different locations and form new connections.
They engaged with yarning sessions focused around culture, motivation and life skills, and there were several activities such as movie-making, role playing and baking.
The girls also took part in a peaceful art session with artist, Allyra Murray, who is one of the co-illustrators of ‘Kaya Kwopetok Koorlang Yok – Dear Beautuful Young Woman’. Everybody got to know Allyra during a Q&A, asking questions about what she was like in high school and what ‘success’ means to her.
There were some more special guests who worked with the girls to create something extra-special, but more on this later!
