Leading Shooting Stars Carnarvon participants developed their leadership skills and awareness of country whilst connecting back to culture on a leadership camp held in Francois Peron National Park, Shark Bay, thanks to the WA Police Community Crime Prevention Fund.
The Count Me In Culture Rewards Camp hosted by award winning Darren ‘Capes’ Capewell, a descendant of the land’s traditional owners and passionate tour guide of the Shark Bay region, was available to participants across both primary and secondary years who have maintained a school attendance record of 80% or more, alongside exemplary behaviour throughout the school year.
The program aims to minimise street presence and potential anti-social behaviour by providing educational sessions on leadership, team-building and culturally enriching activities as well as life skills and personal development and decision making.
The camp saw the girls take part in activities such as kayaking, looking at cultural sites in Monkey Mia, spending a day on a catamaran learning about the marine life, 4WD-ing along Cape Peron, bushwalking and learning about indigenous flora and fauna and bush medicine whilst camping each night under the stars engaging in storytelling.
Shooting Stars Executive Officer, Fran Haintz said the camp was a great opportunity to reward our participants for all their hard work whilst reconnecting with culture and country.
“By building our participants’ skills today in leadership, teamwork, communication, cultural and environmental awareness and respect we are shaping our leaders to be successful now and into the future,” said Haintz.
“A big thank you to the WA Police for supporting the program and Darren ‘Capes’ Capewell for delivering the camp with passion and infectious enthusiasm, making this an experience our girls will remember forever.”
