During the Term 3 School Holidays, Shooting Stars staff gathered in Broome, Fremantle, and Whyalla for a week of focused training and planning. These workshops were essential in preparing for an exciting and eventful Term 4, enhancing program delivery, and deepening a collective understanding of the Shooting Stars Way.
Staff from the Northwest met in Broome, while Southern WA teams gathered in Fremantle, and the South Australian staff held their workshop in Whyalla.
The training workshops in each location were filled with activities designed to foster team building, enhance staff connections, and develop skills to support effective program delivery. Sessions were led by staff from different departments, covering a range of information and processes that are crucial to the program.
The workshops were planned to ensure staff were ready to hit the ground running for the final term of the year. Planning was a central focus, with teams preparing for key events, camps, and the highly anticipated end-of-year awards nights at all sites.
Some of the week’s highlights in Broome included a visit from Horizon Power’s Customer and Community Manager, Linsey, and learning about the local history of the pearling industry from a Traditional Owner’s perspective. The team members in Fremantle enjoyed a couple of social games on the court with the Netball WA crew, a paint and sip session and a Survivor Challenge facilitated by Be Challenged. The SA team embraced their ice-breaker activities and a stand-out for their week was a Sassy Queens dance workshop (complete with 80’s themed outfits!).
Shooting Stars Executive Officer, Helen Ockerby reflected on the importance of the week:
“This professional development week was all about strengthening our internal processes and supporting site teams to take ownership of the Shooting Stars program within each community. It’s inspiring to see how far we've come this year, and I’m excited for us to finish 2024 on a high and carry that momentum into 2025.”
