West Coast Fever Captain and Shooting Stars Ambassador, Courtney Bruce, is bringing her passion for netball and education to Shooting Stars sites in the Kimberley region this week.
Bruce is set to travel to Halls Creek and Derby where she will take part in a range of activities, including the Shooting Stars Derby Colour Run and a netball skills session with the Shooting Stars participants.
A regular visitor to Shooting Stars sites across the state, Bruce said it’s so important to connect with the girls in person.
“I’ve been lucky enough to come up here for the past four years now and to watch the girls become more confident in their identity, their culture and see their attitudes towards school change, it’s been pretty special,” said Bruce.
Bruce said connecting with the Shooting Stars participants isn’t just for their benefit, she learns just as much from them as they do from her.
“The kids, especially in the Kimberley, are just super relaxed and I think being up here, it relaxes me and brings me back down to earth a bit and reminds me of what life is really about, friendships and family and having more of a balance – I think it’s something the Shooting Stars girls do really well,” said Bruce.
Shooting Stars Executive Officer Fran Haintz said the connection between the Shooting Stars participants and West Coast Fever players helps to encourage greater school engagement and inspires our participants that through hard work and dedication they can achieve anything.
“We are very fortunate to have role models like Courtney who is a Shooting Stars Ambassador and has been engaged with the program for some time,” said Haintz.
“It’s been really special to see her form strong and lasting bonds with both the participants and our amazing team.”
