Barngarla (Whyalla) Shooting Stars participants were rewarded over the weekend with a camp in Adelaide to coincide with the First Nations Round home game for the Adelaide Thunderbirds. The girls took part in an action-packed reward experience that saw many of them enjoy a trip to the city for the first time.
The trip started with a bang, visiting the Netball SA stadium for an immersion session with the Adelaide Thunderbirds players. The session started with the group splitting up to get to know each other, discussing their journeys to get to where they are today. They then came back together to go through a series of netball drills, including a competitive game of bump and even a mini netball match, which saw Thunderbirds players and Shooting Stars girls pair up. After the session, many of the girls were adamant that they’d be netballers and take after their new idols.
The girls then took part in a boardroom lunch with new Shooting Stars partner, GFG Alliance. The GFG team ran through exactly how steel is made and even made a currency trade in real-time in front of the girls.
The afternoon and next morning were spent taking part in reward activities, such as testing their skills at Latitude, a pamper session and shopping.
The highlight of the weekend was Adelaide Thunderbirds’ home game for First Nations round, taking place at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre for the first time this season. The girls cheered the Thunderbirds on courtside, decked out in their scarves and beanies. The win alluded the Thunderbirds, but it didn’t put a dampener on the experience for the girls, who were treated with courtside conversations and photos with the team after the match.
Shooting Stars Whyalla Regional Manager, Stacey Gray, said how proud she was of the girls for their behaviour on the camp.
“The camp had a focus on increasing confidence and connection. Throughout the camp, the girls gave everything a go, encouraged each other, built stronger friendships and connections with each other and we saw their confidence grow. The girls lead with heart and loved yarning with the Thunderbirds, working through fears, learning about our culture and watching the Thunderbirds play.”
