Shooting Stars Executive Officer Fran Haintz spoke about this year’s International Women’s Day theme ‘Break the Bias’ as a special guest at the Goldfield’s Group High Tea on Tuesday, March 8.
‘Break the Bias’ aims to achieve a world free of stereotypes and discrimination that is diverse, equitable and inclusive.
Haintz, who was invited to speak on a panel at the event, challenged the systems and institutions that disempower Aboriginal girls and women.
“To break the bias we need to acknowledge the current state of play for all women and challenge the status quo,” she said.
“For Aboriginal women, we have to challenge the very real fact that racism is the first major barrier, followed by the systems and institutions and the people in them.
“Over the last seven years, Shooting Stars has put a strong focus on helping close the gap for Aboriginal women in leadership positions across Western Australia.
“It's key to acknowledge the amazing foundations of past leaders and change-makers but bias in our society still exists against all women and girls. Let's keep our eyes clearly on driving toward a future we want to see for all women and all peoples in our society.”
