Shooting Stars joins forces with the University of Western Australia’s McCusker Centre for Citizenship to help build the capacity of future generations to foster caring, connected and socially engaged citizens.
Through the Centre’s award-winning internship program, Shooting Stars has had the privilege of hosting Olivia Trimboli, a UWA student studying a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Law & Society and Criminology.
Currently in the process of completing 100 hours with Shooting Stars, Olivia claims her internship has been invaluable to her professional development.
“My plan is to become a qualified lawyer and ultimately work in a community legal centre or in the not-for-profit space in some capacity. So being part of Shooting Stars and learning how not-for-profits operate and how the different roles contribute to achieving its vision has been really valuable,” said Olivia.
“Even just working in a professional environment, I’ve learnt a lot of transferable skills like collaborating with people with diverse skillsets as well as diverse backgrounds.”
Passionate about empowering women through education, Olivia shares her admiration for the program.
“I think Shooting Stars is amazing, personally I value education a lot. I’ve always enjoyed learning and obviously I am passionate about empowering women and seeing more female representation in leadership positions,” said Olivia.
“Through Shooting Stars I’ve gained a deeper understanding of the barriers that affect Aboriginal girls in attending school and also how lucky I personally have been with the opportunities I had growing up, enabling me to complete school and now be at uni. So, it’s really amazing to see Shooting Stars break down those barriers and support Aboriginal girls in achieving their full potential.”
Shooting Stars is committed to supporting broader education around reconciliation and through its relationship with UWA’s McCusker Centre for Citizenship the organisation is able to build awareness of the challenges for Aboriginal girls and women in our communities with the leaders of tomorrow.
