Shooting Stars is pleased to announce a $150,000 funding boost from the West Australian Department of Education.
Shooting Stars is an initiative of Netball WA and Glass Jar Australia, which uses netball to encourage greater attendance and engagement at school for young Aboriginal girls living in remote areas of Western Australia.
The funds will be spread throughout Shooting Stars’ sites in Carnarvon, Halls Creek, Derby, Mullewa, Wiluna and Narrogin, whilst supporting the activation of our latest site in Leonora.
The Program helps its participants by providing support to engage in education and wellbeing activities, working to create hope and motivation to achieve their full potential.
Shooting Stars Executive Officer Fran Haintz thanked the Government for the funding boost.
“It’s fantastic to see further support from the State Government helping Shooting Stars push for genuine positive change for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls,” Haintz said.
“I would like to thank the Education Department for this significant investment which will have a direct impact in boosting outcomes across all of our sites in Western Australia by supporting improved planning and program development projects.”
“Support from State and Federal Government has been essential in helping Shooting Stars expand throughout Western Australia.”
Education Minister Sue Ellery said that funding for the Shooting Stars program related to key components of the Department of Education’s Strategic Plan for WA Public Schools 2016-2018: High care, high performance and Focus 2018 plan.
“This one-off funding will help identified regional schools to support female Aboriginal students to boost their learning and achievement – and importantly, students will also have opportunities to develop leadership and other skills and get involved in their communities,” Minister Ellery said.
“The funding is targeted – and is about improving girls’ attendance and interest in school – using netball as a motivating force to reach their goals at learning and in life.”
